$ 97.98
Description Antique Staunton “War Model” Tournament Chessmen. An Antique Staunton “War Model” Chessmen unweighted and felted, modeled after the Jaques of London Marshall style chessmen made between around 1930 and 1940. This vintage Chess set is natural and ebonized Boxwood. The King stands 3.5″ tall with a 1.7″ diameter base. The Kingside Rooks and Knights were marked with the King’s crown as was common for the period to facilitate scorekeeping using Descriptive notation. These pre-WWII chess sets are characterized by their wide bases and fine craftsmanship. The Knights appear to have been sourced from an outside carving house. Nore notable is the use of black-stained Boxwood in lieu of Ebony, which was restricted due to the war effort. . The chessmen have the classic Jaques proportions, profiles and finish. The chessmen are housed in what appears to be its original slide-top wooden box, but that is not certain. These particular chessmen were produced around 1940. The chessmen are excellent condition for their age and have developed a very attractive patina over time. The set appears to have been used very infrequently. these Antonie Staunton War Model chessmen play and display best on a chessboard with 2-1/4″ s. For reference, the chess pieces are shown on a chessboard with 2-1/4″ squares. No chessboard is included with this offering, but a suitable chessboard can be found here.
